Old World Wedding Customs and Traditions

Old-world customs often continue to thrive imperfectly—that is, in diluted, disguised, or upgraded form--even though they are obsolete.  For example, the custom of the father presenting the bride:  the “giving away” of the bride is a Protestant heritage.  In Roman Catholic and Jewish weddings, the bride's father escorts, but does not “give away” his daughter.
